The Greatest Generation

My little Daddy kept Moving and Doing in his Golden Years. He went to the YMCA everyday. The YMCA featured his picture and an article about him on their magazine. The only question that I can remember is “ Mr. Prater why do you think so many of the younger members are not consistent like you and do not have your work ethic? Daddy replied, “because the younger generation did not live in the Great Depression, Fight Wars, toil for your food and they are lazy!”
I wonder what the lady thought about when my Daddy ended his answer, they are lazy.” To be honest I thought he is answer was profound, true and hilarious.
Growing up with older parents, I heard countless stories of hardships and fun, heartwarming, and funny stories. They had to work, and live without our modern day conveniences. Though I never heard my parents complain about how they grew up either.
Instead my happy go lucky Mama would tell me on Saturday nights she would roller skate in the Big town of Millport while rolling her hair with Bobby pins for church. My mom would tell me how she and her girlfriends would ride their bikes on Saturday around the little town of Millport, once my Mama got her chores done. The highlight of the week for my Mama was taking piano lessons.
Just like my Mama, instead of my daddy talking about how hard things were, he would tell me how he would do his most favorite thing and go fishing. He would go skinny dipping with his friends. His brother Dan was his best friend , and when their chores were done, they were in all sorts of mischief.
I hope I find this YMCA magazine. I wish I would have had him autograph it. That would have made his day. My supportive Mama and my Daddy were so proud that YMCA featured him.
