My Huckleberry Friend

Recently, as I was getting ready one morning, Moon River started to play on my phone. The phrase in this enchanting song, “My huckleberry friend,” touched my heart.

Mama was my Huckleberry Friend. She loved to read, and Mark Twain was one of her favorite authors. I remember her reading Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn to me. Just like Huckleberry Finn was to Tom Sawyer, Mama was a devoted and loyal friend to me.

I loved being in Mama’s presence. She could do anything. She gave her time, not things. She was fun and my favorite playmate.

She was my book. She was my author. She was my teacher. She was my storyteller. She was my seamstress. She was my song. She is my guardian angel.
