Empty Nesting

Empty nesting happens so fast. It’s a bittersweet time. I am no longer the director at home—guarding, guiding, or directing my kids. My new role is being in the audience, watching my three amazing kids become adults. They all know I have always been their biggest fan. This empty nesting season, while it can cause you to question your purpose, can also be the greatest transformation to witness; both in your adult kids and in yourself.

My sweet daughters are intuitive, they check on me, and whenever I share a positive opportunity, they are my biggest cheerleaders. I realize the 24 years I dedicated to being a full-time homemaker, caring for my husband and our three kids, was a marathon God trained me for. Through it, He prepared me to use my gifts of nurturing, listening, encouraging, and praying to volunteer, mentor others, lead Bible studies, and pray in public settings.

There is no doubt we all face hardships. My heart is grateful that my kids are strong and resilient. Of course, my Hannah has Garrett, and it is such a joy to watch their newlywed life. I’m thankful they include me—like sending thoughtful pictures of them making pottery. Jackson is working hard and is independent like his Dad. I’m grateful for his beautiful girlfriend, inside and out.

My Lilly Grace, who officially made me an empty nester, is thriving at TCU. She and her boyfriend are best friends, and I love seeing them enjoy simple fun together.

This is the transformation I have to embrace. Even though I’m in the audience now, all three of my kids have invited me to be part of their changing lives. What more could a Mama ask for?
